What is the Census?
Every 10 years, the federal government is legally required to count every person living in the country, regardless of citizenship status, as part of the U.S. Census.
The Census is used to determine funding for vital programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, affordable housing, Headstart, and more.
The government also uses Census data to draw district lines and determine how many seats each state will get in the House of Representatives.
Under law, your answers are required to be kept confidential, anonymous, and only used to produce statistics.
DEADLINE to take the Census: Sept. 30, 2020
Why should all Californians complete the Census?
A complete and accurate count of California’s population is essential. The data collected by the Census determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is used to distribute billions of dollars in federal funds to state and local governments.
By completing 9 simple quesions, you can help your community get more funding for building better roads and schools; community programs for seniors, children, and families; improve housing; and create more jobs.
Work for the Census Bureau as an Enumerator – this individual goes to peoples’ homes to count them if they do not respond to the Census. Find out more here! As of the week of Aug. 10, numerators are already fanning out to remind people to take the Census! Find out more here.
